Turmeric is a flowering plant related to ginger that is grown throughout Southeast Asia and Central America. The roots which are used in cooking, have a deep golden colour and a sharp, slightly bitter flavour.
Turmeric is a popular spice and a major ingredient in curry powder, garam masala and many chutneys.
Its primary active ingredients, curcuminoids, are yellow and used to colour foods and cosmetics. It has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb.
Cooking with Turmeric
You could blend 1 tsp into your smoothie – add a little coconut oil too.
Try adding 1 tsp to soups, curries, rice (add to the cooking water), tea, sprinkle over hummus or cook legumes in it. The possibilities are endless.
