Sesame Seed Hulled

Sesame seeds are the seed of the sesame plant. The plant grows foxglove-like flowers that produce pods containing the edible seeds. These pods burst open with a pop when the seeds are mature.

White and black varieties of sesame seed are available. Black sesame seeds are unhulled (meaning its shell is still intact), while white sesame seeds have had their hulls removed to reveal the white inner parts of the seeds.

The white seeds have a sweet, nutty, delicate flavour and can be used in all dishes calling for sesame seeds. The black seeds are crispier and are also slightly bitter as a result of the hulls being present. They are often used for aesthetic appeal to contrast white coloured food such as sushi, breads and rice.

Sesame seeds have been used as a condiment and a source of edible oil for over 5,000 years.

They can be pressed to make sesame oil, toasted to make sesame paste (often used as a peanut butter substitute), used to make tahini paste, sprinkled onto savoury dishes and burger buns, and studding crackers and sweets in Asian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Caribbean cuisines.

Cooking With Sesame Seeds

You can sprinkle toasted sesame seeds on top of stir-fries, salads, and soups, or make tahini paste with the untoasted seeds. The nutty flavour and crunch go well with many kinds of baked goods, both sweet and savoury.

How To Toast Sesame Seeds

To toast sesame seeds, pop them on a baking tray in the oven for 10-15 minutes or dry fry on the stove for 3-5 minutes. Keep stirring until the turn a golden brown.

Sesame seed paste is so easy to make and is a great addition to noodle dishes, salads, fillings for buns, and dipping sauces.

Just toast 1 cup of white sesame seeds on a baking sheet for 5-10 minutes – take out when they are just turning brown. Let them cool down, then pop into a food processor and blitz on a medium speed. Once they are crushed, turn to a low speed and slowly pour in 1 cup of light oil.

That’s it! Then store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 month.
